GPT Is Human Cognition’s 10X Moment

Our age is defined by change. Transformation is at hand and AI is at the center of this dynamic. But the transition itself has a unique characteristic that harkens back to the fossil record and the dinosaurs. Simply stated, nothing much happens for a long period time and then, often out of left field, comes a driver of change. And after which, a new reality emerges. There are a few models in nature that come to mind and offer some perspective on today’s reality.

Punctuated Equilibrium. Stephen Jay Gould was an American paleontologist, evolutionary biologist, and science historian who proposed the theory of punctuated equilibrium along with Niles Eldredge in 1972. Gould suggested that the gradual change doesn’t happen. A long period of stasis is punctuated by more rapid and defining change that disrupts the equilibrium, or status quo. And interestingly, these evolutionary changes don’t necessarily emerge as part of the mainstream, but also in isolated populations. In other words, disruption can come out of left field, and can change small, large and well-entrenched systems.

Quantum Shift. In physics, a quantum shift refers to a sudden, discontinuous change in the behavior or properties of a system that occurs due to the effects of quantum mechanics. In classical physics, physical systems behave according to well-defined laws and are generally predictable. However, in the quantum world, the behavior of particles and systems is described by probabilities and wave functions, and their behavior can appear unpredictable or bizarre. A quantum shift can occur when a system undergoes a change in its quantum state, leading to new and unexpected behaviors or properties. In the simplest of terms, a quantum shift or jump is a change from one state to another, with no middle or transitional level. It’s all or nothing.

Both punctuated equilibrium and a quantum shift reflects an inflection in a system that often, but isn’t limited to, a order of magnitude change. That’s not a 10%, 50%, or even 100% change, but an 10-fold transformation or 1,000%.
